China's International Education Has Achieved New Results
2019-09-16 09:32 Xinhua News Agency

General Secretary Cares About the People Around the World

Chinese Students Study in more than 100 countries and regions around the world

More than 80% choose to return to China

China's international education has achieved new results

In September 2018, General Secretary Xi Jinping emphasized at the National Education Conference that it is necessary to expand education and open up high-level cooperation with world-class resources.

Since the reform and opening up, China's education has made great strides in "going out" while "bringing in". Through the introduction of high-quality educational resources and cooperation in cultivating high-level talents, we have embraced, learned from, and absorbed the outstanding achievements of various civilizations, which strengthen the cultural exchanges and promote the commonwealth of the people.

Go out with an open mind

“When I first arrived abroad, everyone around me was speaking English. Everyone has a different accent. Even the accent is different. It sounds a bit dizzy.”

"How did you adapt?"

"There is no shortcut, and you can only listen to it on the scalp, just like listening to English. Once it is integrated, it will be understood very quickly, including the professional vocabulary inside."

......

At the beginning of the semester, in the face of more than a dozen graduate students, ChaoWang, an associate professor of the Aerospace College, Harbin Institute of Technology, gave a vivid "first lesson of thought."

ChaoWang is a young scholar in the field of material mechanics and has been paying attention to key issues such as the interaction of materials and mechanics. A few years ago, he went to the University of Sydney, Australia to study for a Ph.D.

"Sometimes, international exchanges are a good complement. Joint scientific research will enable scientists and technicians in different fields and countries to produce 'chemical reactions' and issue new research results." He also said, exchange and learn from each othercan promote a new understanding of scientific issues creating a more open and diverse international scientific research ecology.

YifanZhao, a third-year doctor, is preparing to apply for studying abroad. She is particularly serious in this class. "Listening to the teacher's story, I want to study abroad afterwards, and I have strengthened my determination. I must work hard to open up academic horizons and accumulate scientific research experience."

"Great achievements can be made with great responsibility, and serve the country through science and technology is the common pursuit and dream of generations of science and technology workers." ChaoWang  said that at present, the state encourages young talents to innovate and start businesses, and the conditions and environment given are unprecedented. "It should be said that we caught up with a good time."

Statistics from the Ministry of Education show that since the reform and opening up, the number of students studying abroad has increased from  hundreds of people per year to 30000 per year, and the number of students studying abroad has grown from less than 1,000 to 662 000 in 2018.

Today, Chinese students are located in more than 100 countries and regions around the world.

The era is witnessing the “returning tide” of the largest number of overseas students in the 70-year history of New China. In 2018, the number of returned overseas students reached 519,000. From the reform and opening up to the end of 2018, the total number of returned overseas students reached 3.651 million.

Cultivating a new era of Marco Polo

"That is my 'highlight moment'." Recalling the moment when he received the reply from President Xi Jinping, YuanhangQi, who just entered Kunshan Duke University this year, said, "President Xi Jinping hopes that we will become a new era of Marco Polo and become a messenger of cultural exchange. I have always remembered his words."

Yuanhang Qi graduated from the National Residential School in Rome, Italy. At the beginning of this year, he and his classmates wrote a letter to President Xi. “In our school, Chinese is a compulsory course.” Qi Yuanhang said, “To write to President Xi, I want to tell him that many young people in Italy like Chinese culture very much and are learning Chinese very hard.”

“In Italy, many universities have Chinese majors.” Xi Xiang, a 23-year-old student from the Chinese Department of the University of Venice, now is a graduate of Suzhou University. In the last year of the undergraduate course, she came to Suzhou, the water city known as the "Venice of the East", as an exchange student, and finally stay to continue study.

“In the beginning, I asked myself every day why I chose Chinese major. Why did I come to China?” Xi Xiang saied, “I thought I did it for work, but then I understood that it has nothing to do with work. I just fell in love with China and I am reluctant to leave here."

“Every time I return to Suzhou from Venice, I have a feeling of coming back.” She determines tobe a translator in Suzhou for Italian companies after graduation. She feels that she is the new era of “Marco Polo”.

In August of this year, under the full funding of the university's “Golden Key Program”, PingyangZheng, a student of Southeastern University, traveled to Turin, Italy, to participate in the United Nations Youth Leadership Summer Elite.

"Unfortunately, I am not so brave to speak in English publicly maybe because of the fear of unknown or the fear of failure, or of afraid of losing self-esteem. But I saw outstanding students from all countries who were cheerful, active and brave to try. They encouraged me to boldly step out of my own ‘comfort circle."

"This experience has greatly expanded my cognitive radius and made me understand that I have to take this step bravely and move towards a broader world." Pingyang Zhengsaid.

Walking in the Dushu Lake Science and Education Innovation Zone in Suzhou, you can easily miss a university without walls. It is difficult to see the obvious separation between the university and the surrounding neighborhoods. This is the Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University founded by Sino-British cooperation.

YouminXi, president of Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University believes that “Chinese-Foreign cooperation in running school is rooted in China’s land-based education. Jiaotong-Liverpool University is not a Chinese branch of a foreign university. We want to be a world-recognized Chinese university and an international university on China’s land an to explore the path of reform and innovation in China's higher education."

"Our university not only has no physical walls, but also has no walls in terms of ideas and resources." Tao Yunji, a student at Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, said, "We don't have a fixed class.80 percent of the teachers are foreign teachers, and they teach in English."

“At present, more than 80% of our graduates choose to go to higher education. More than two-thirds of the students have entered the top 100 universities in the world for further study.”

Bai Xue, professor from the Collage of Electronic Science and Engineering of Jilin University, has published 119 SCI papers. Eight years ago, she was an ordinary lecturer and was once in a confused period.

“I want to thank the Academy’s “Golden Seed Project”, which allowed me to have access to international frontier issues at the beginning of academic life and to grow rapidly.” In 2011, Bai Xue was selected by the college to be a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Aveiro in Portugal.

Bai Xue said that the study experience has changed her perception of the experiment. “Before, at home, we experimented to make progress and results as quickly as possible. But European counterparts made experimentation as fun and kept child-like curiosity about every new result.”

“Many people think that the experiment fails and it is no longer necessary to redo it. The result of failure is useless. But the revelation I got from my European counterparts is that failure may contain new possibilities.”

“In the exchanges with international counterparts, I opened up my academic vision and made clear the white light lighting as my research direction.” Now including Bai Xue, the “Golden Seed Project” of Jilin University has already produced 4 National Outstanding Youth Funds.
